BACKGROUND
The Nordic Society of
Tourism and Hospitality Research in collaboration with University of
Akureyrí are pleased to announce the 2nd pre-conference
doctoral colloquium for doctoral students in tourism and hospitality
management.
The colloquium, which
will take place immediately prior to the Nordic Tourism Research
Symposium 2005 provides doctoral students in tourism with an outstanding
opportunity to discuss their dissertation research with other doctoral
students and leading academics in this field. All topics and
methodological approaches within the broad field of tourism consumption
will be considered. This year’s topic, tourism experiences is an
empirical domain uniting disciplinary fields, such as consumer behaviour,
marketing, and social anthropology.
The colloquium will be held from Sunday September, 18 until Thursday,
September 22, 2005. It will mostly proceed in thematic tracks based on
topical and/or methodological angle of participants' work. Students will
discuss their work in roundtable sessions (one-hour presentation) with
their fellow students and with track faculty experts. Plenary/keynote
sessions will feature Nordic scholars in this field, such as Lena
Mossberg, Can-Seng Ooi, Steve Milne, Reidar Mykletun and Szilvia
Gyimóthy.
TRACKS
Students can submit
proposals for one of the two track profiles, based on the traditional
division of the field in the major academic journals.
EXPERIENCE
MANAGEMENT: includes all work conducted from a managerial
perspective in any functional field of tourism: including tourism
policies, host contexts, international destination branding and cultural
consumption, etc.
CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR:
includes all work conducted from a consumer perspective, and can be
theoretical or related to any of the functional fields in tourism:
consumption psychology, advertising, behavioural modelling.
The final number and content specification of tracks will depend on the
number and nature of the accepted proposals. Track faculty names will be
announced soon.
CALL FOR PAPERS AND CREDITS
Interested doctoral
students should register (and add the required documents) by email to
Guðný Pálína Sæmundsdóttir no later than August 15, 2005. Besides
doctoral students, other researchers may participate. The number of
participants will be limited to create a stimulating environment. The
selection among the applicants will be conducted by the colloquium
faculty. The submission procedure is closed.
Candidates should
submit a four-page summary of their doctoral research, outlining the
research problem against the existing literature, discussing the
methodology and showing some initial empirical results. Doctoral
students at all stages could benefit from participation. All outstanding
proposals will be accepted, and we want to encourage especially the
senior students to submit, who have already completed at least part of
their empirical work. Please note that your name and contact details
should appear on the summary.
Candidates should also submit a
Curriculum Vitae.
The admitted
proposals in each topical track will be made available to all
participants in the corresponding topical track to allow everyone to
prepare the discussions. The colloquium will be held in a collaborative,
open and friendly atmosphere. In respect to this philosophy,
participants are required to attend the entire colloquium. All
participants will receive a certificate of attendance worth 6 ECTs (4
Swedish credit points), upon successful completion of the colloquium.
Please notice that you are expected to read about 1000 pages of related
literature as well as to author an 8-page essay after the venue.
